Christmas is the perfect time to settle down and enjoy a wonderful festive film. We’ve scrapped mainstream TV in our house and now only pay for on-demand subscription services such as Netflix, Disney+ etc. Honestly, we found these services to be the only thing we watched on TV, and it just so happened that they provided in my opinion at least much better value for money.
We are therefore super excited to share with you our favourite Christmas family movies available on Netflix. Movies do drop off Netflix now and again (it’s to do with licencing I believe), however, all these movies were available in the UK, US and Canada at the time of writing (be sure to let me know in the comments below if you notice one is no longer available)
This list contains something for everyone with Netflix Origionals, animations and traditional Christmas classics such as Helen’s favourite – A White Christmas.
If you’re into musicals and you think this type of movie would be perfect for your Christmas time with the family, then give This Christmas a shot. The movie was released in 2007 and is a romantic musical comedy-drama.
It is based on Donny Hathaway’s song with the same name. Chris Brown stars in the movie and covers the song.
But aside from the musical aspect, this movie is about a family trying to overcome their emotional obstacles. After four years, they meet for the Christmas celebration and it turns into a chance for them to vent their feelings to each other.
Angela’s Christmas is the type of movie you would want to watch when the family gathers together. The film is based on a book for children written by Frank McCourt, which also won the Pulitzer Prize.
It is a heart-warming story about a little Irish girl who shows her kindness by trying her best to keep the baby Jesus doll warm at all times.
After the doll is left without its blanket, she is always struggling to keep it warm. However, it isn’t that easy, so she jumps from an adventure to another in her mission.
If you have kids in your family, then this movie will be amazing for them, although the adults may come to love it too.
This is an animated movie in which Santa has a mission – he wants to find a successor.
That being said, during the movie, he is on the search for a young boy who can fulfil the job. The goal is to prepare the boy for when Santa retires, so the joyful spirit of Christmas can be maintained.
No matter the age, this can be an amazing movie for everyone.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
It can’t be a complete Christmas without the amazingness of Jim Carrey’s The Grinch. The movie released in 2000 can immediately change your mood on Christmas night – for the better.
The movie is following the story of Mr. Grinch, whose goal is to steal Christmas from the people in Whoville.
The film is based on Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, and it is filled with funny scenes that will make your day, but it doesn’t lack emotional scenes either.
Does the Grinch steal Christmas in the end? You can only find out by watching the movie.
White Christmas is an older movie, but it still conveys the magic of Christmas and can bring back beautiful memories.
You will not fail to notice the amazing dance costumes worn in the film. Moreover, if you have someone in your family who isn’t too fond of Christmas, you should suggest this movie.
The song played during the movie has the power to turn around even the most Christmas-hating person, so don’t hesitate to watch this when everyone gathers together.
Let It, Snow
What’s better than watching a movie of a group of people gathering together for Christmas while you are doing the same with your family?
That’s exactly what happened in Let It Snow – except the fact that the circumstances were a bit different. The movie is about a group of teenagers brought together by a snowstorm.
After that, they end up having various adventures – from trying to impress people, to love confessions, and forming relationships. Let It Snow is a romantic comedy based on a novel by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle.
Holiday Rush is a nice movie where a family is doing its best to help another family member – isn’t that a wonderful thing to watch with your own family?
In the story, a popular radio DJ, known as DJ Rashon “Rush” Williams, ends up losing his radio station job after it adapts to a pop format.
Rush and his four children have to move back into Aunt Jo’s house. Then, he brings to life an old radio station known as WBQL, and his producer Roxy helps him out.
However, CamCom encourages advertisers not to advertise on WBQL. As such, the family is trying to help him stay online during Christmas.
A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish
This movie is a different version of the Cinderella you once knew. It’s a great story about Kat, who is an aspiring singer.
Her life is not easy. Her stepmother and stepsisters are not too nice, and they treat her very badly as if she were a servant.
But her life takes a positive turn when she meets Nick, a handsome young man who invites her to sing at a holiday gala.
As such, her life changes when she gets this miracle during Christmas.
Puppy Star Christmas
If you like dogs and your family shares the same love for these furry little friends, Puppy Star Christmas would be the perfect movie to watch.
A gang of dogs hijacks the North Pole and Santa Claus, and thus puts Christmas at risk. However, not all hope is lost, because four brave puppies will do everything in their power to ensure that things return to normal.
You can follow the adventure of the adorable dogs and find out if they can save Santa Claus and the North Pole.
48 Christmas Wishes
48 Christmas Wishes is a movie that conveys the fact that Santa Claus’s elves are human, and can make mistakes – especially given all the hard work they have to put in.
The story has Santa’s elves misplacing all of the letters the town sent, which puts at risk the entire Christmas holiday and the happiness of the citizens. A solution must be found, which is why the two elves do their best to save the holiday.
The juniors will thus venture into the world looking for an answer and end up retrieving all the missing wishes before the Christmas Eve arrives. The movie will make you feel the Christmas spirit while you are enjoying it with your family.
If you want an unforgettable Christmas night with your family and friends, then you should try out one of these movies. You will not regret it.
